Doch waren Agonalitat und Wettbewerb auch in der Fruhen Neuzeit allgegenwartig, in Form von Rangkonflikten, Ehrenhandeln, der Konkurrenz zwischen den Konfessionen, dem Ringen um Ressourcen oder der Rivalitat von Kolonialmachten. Trotzdem war agonale Konkurrenz bis zum 18. Jahrhundert moralisch anruchig. Zwischen der Dynamik von Konkurrenzbeziehungen und ihrer gerade den Aspekt des Wettkampfs oft ausblendenden Wahrnehmung auf Seiten der Akteure bestand ein Spannungsbogen. Ihm widmen sich die in diesem Band dokumentierten Beitrage der 13. Arbeitstagung der AG Fruhe Neuzeit im Verband der Historiker und Historikerinnen Deutschlands, die im September 2019 in Rostock stattfand. Sie befassen sich damit, wie in vormodernen Gesellschaften Konstellationen der Rivalitat und des Wettbewerbs bewertet wurden, wie Konkurrenz mehr oder weniger erfolgreich eingehegt wurde, welche Dynamiken sie in Gang setzte und auf welchen Feldern sie sich teils verdeckt, teils offen entfalten konnte. In dieser Perspektive stellt die Beschaftigung mit Konkurrenz einen Schlussel zum Verstandnis der Normen- und Werteordnung der Fruhen Neuzeit dar.
