Traduction, introduction et notes

The History of Armenia by Kirakos Ganjakec’i (1271/1272 ?), is a fundamental source for the Mongol invasions in Armenia. A privileged witness of the invasion of the Mongolian troops into Transcaucasiaof which he was a prisonerhe gives a detailed account, neither lacking in flavor nor in piquancy, of this people, who terrorized the populations from 1231 onwards and built an empire. The information provided by Kirakos Ganjakec’i complements that of European travelers, Persian, Seljuk, and Syriac-speaking historiographers. It is also a unique source on the princes of the Zak’arean family who presided over the destiny of a large part of Armenia under Georgian rule (1199-1236). But Kirakos Ganjakec’i is above all a vardapet of the Armenian Church who is interested in all the cultural problems of his time and reveals the details of the great theological debates that agitated the religious history of the thirteenth century.
