L’Inscription sacree d’Evhemere de Messene, redigee a la charniere du IVe et du IIIe siecle avant J.-C., relate la decouverte d’une ile au large de l’Arabie, la Panchaie, qui abritait un sanctuaire de Zeus contenant des inscriptions sacrees gravees sur une stele. Celles-ci racontaient la geste des principaux dieux, presentes comme de puissants mortels divinises. L’ouvrage, entre mythe et histoire, exerca une enorme influence et fut a l’origine du courant dit evhemeriste, qui voyait dans les dieux des hommes divinises pour leur puissance, leurs decouvertes ou leurs bienfaits. Ce volume presente pour la premiere fois une traduction francaise de l’ensemble des reliquiae d’Evhemere. Le nouveau classement des temoignages et fragments propose permet au lecteur de suivre la structure supposee de l’Inscription sacree, tandis que l’introduction et le commentaire offrent une interpretation originale de l’ouvrage d’Evhemere, qui creait une mythologie nouvelle centree sur la figure du roi-dieu conquerant et civilisateur Zeus, fondateur de la religion et image idealisee d’Alexandre le Grand.
