Die Aneignung des Anderen in Bearbeitungen des Tristanstoffes im 12. und 13. Jahrhundert

This volume concentrates on episodes in Middle High German literature in which identity becomes ambiguous through the using of disguises. In this way, these episodes are not underestimated as droll story elements but are actively used to explain how identity is constructed in medieval literature. It is the aim of this monograph to uncover and analyze the link between identity and disguise and in so doing contribute to a fuller understanding of the different and manifold ways of identity construction in the Middle Ages and to show parallels to modern forms if identity. Subject of the study is the Tristan character who uses disguises continuously due to his illicit love to Isolde and the resulting need for secrecy. This is achieved by not only looking at the ‘Tristan’ of Gottfried of Straßburg but at all Middle High German Tristan narrations of the 12th and 13th century. <br/>
English Summary: The volume at hand reflects upon the question of possibilities and interdependencies of identity and disguise in medieval literature. Rather than simply setting aside episodes of disguise as ‘wavering motifs of medieval literature,’ a focus is set upon these episodes in regard to their significance for the constitution of identity. The aim of this work is to uncover and examine the connection between identity and disguise in order to obtain a more comprehensive picture of the construction of identity in the Middle Ages in its differences and diversity as well as in its parallels to modern forms of identity. The object at hand is the figure of Tristan, which serves almost as a prime example of medieval possibilities of disguise, for “in all Tristan-poetry one finds episodes in which the hero attempts to conceal his identity from his environment.” German Description: Im Zentrum dieser Arbeit steht die Frage nach den Moglichkeiten und den Interdependenzen von Identitat und Maske in der mittelalterlichen Literatur. Gleichzeitig sollen Masken-Episoden nicht einfach als schwankhafte Motive mittelalterlicher Literatur beiseitegeschoben werden, sondern in Bezug auf ihre Bedeutung fur die Konstituierung von Identitat in den Fokus rucken. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, durch Aufdecken und Untersuchen des Zusammenhangs von Identitat und Maske ein umfassenderes Bild von Identitatsbildung im Mittelalter in ihrer Differenz und Vielfaltigkeit, aber auch in ihren Parallelen zu modernen Identitatsformen zu erhalten. Objekt der vorliegenden Untersuchung ist die Tristanfigur, die geradezu als Paradebeispiel fur mittelalterliche Moglichkeiten der Maske steht, denn “in allen Tristandichtungen findet man Episoden, in denen der Held seine Identitat vor seiner Umwelt zu verheimlichen versucht”.

Bamberg, Diss., 2014) ist der Frage nach der Identität der Tristanfigur in den deutschsprachigen Tristanbearbeitungen sowie den Möglichkeiten, diese durch Maskierung(en) zu verschleiern, gewidmet. (...) Aufbauend auf einem überzeugenden Theoriekapitel spürt sie den Maskierungen und der damit einhergehenden Identitätsbewahrung, -verschleierung aber auch -aufgabe der Tristanfigur in den Texten Eilharts, Gottfrieds, Ulrichs und Heinrichs sowie in Tristan als Mönch nach. (...)
