Henry VIII counts among the most powerful English monarchs of the 16th century. Through his far-sighted politics, he build the foundations of the British Empire. Today, he is mostly known for his numerous marriages. This volume only touches shortly on Henrys marriages and private life and focuses instead on a thematically structured history of England in the first half of the 16th century and on its varied and changing relations to the European continent. English summary: Apart from Elizabeth I, Henry VIII is the most powerful English king in the 16th century. Thanks to his far-sighted policy, he succeeded in creating the basis for the British Empire. Today we know this important ruler predominantly because of his many wives; but he is significantly more important as the founder of the English state church and because of his disputes with Parliament, the nobility and other rulers in Europe. In addition, the Early Modern state was also formed during his reign. The author briefly sketches the life of the King, but the subsequent focus of his presentation is on a thematically structured history of England. Ihm gelang es, durch eine weitsichtige Politik die Grundlagen fur das ”englische Empire” zu legen. Heute kennen wir diesen bedeutenden Herrscher meist nur aufgrund seiner vielen Ehen; wichtiger ist er aber aufgrund seiner Grundung der Englischen Staatskirche und der Auseinandersetzungen mit Parlament, Adel und den anderen europaischen Herrschern. Zudem bildete sich wahrend seiner Regentschaft der fruhmoderne Staat heraus, der die folgenden Jahrhunderte bestimmen sollte. Der Autor skizziert nur kurz Leben und Heiraten des Konigs, legt jedoch danach den Schwerpunkt der Darstellung auf eine thematisch strukturierte Geschichte Englands in der ersten Halfte des 16. Jahrhunderts und auf die vielfaltigen und wechselnden Beziehungen Heinrichs wie Englands zum Kontinent Europa.
