Neben den lateinischen und den griechischen Kirchenvatern haben die syrischen Kirchenvater eine dritte kirchenschriftstellerisch schopferische Tradition hervorgebracht. In Sprache und Mentalitat konnen die Syrer mit Recht eine grosse Nahe zu Jesus Christus fur sich beanspruchen, und syrische Theologen waren es, die aristotelische Schriften an die Araber weitergaben, die sie ihrerseits Europa vermittelten. In der Einleitung des Bandes werden die Ereignisse um die christologische Diskussion vor allem des 5. Jahrhunderts beschrieben, die zwar weitgehend griechischsprachig verlief, aber entscheidend fur die syrische Kirchenlandschaft wurde. Es folgen in drei Gruppierungen – Fruhe und chalkedonensische Kirchenvater, Vater der Kirche des Ostens, Vater der Syrisch-Orthodoxen Kirche – 18 Einzeldarstellungen syrischer Kirchenvater von Aphrahat dem Persischen Weisen bis Gregorios Bar Hebraeus).
