Das nunmehr in vierter Auflage vorliegende Buch ist uber – arbeitet, die neueren Forschungen seit der 3. Auflage sind eingearbeitet. Es gilt als ein Standardwerk der Reformationsgeschichte, das seinen besonderen Charakter auch dem Umstand verdankt, dass es die Wissenschaftsgeschichte der Reformation eines halben Jahrhunderts zur Darstellung bringt. Einleitend werden die Ausgangsbedingungen der Reformation geschildert (Frommigkeit, Kirchenkritik) und die wichtigsten deutschsprachigen Reformatoren (Luther, Zwingli, Muntzer) mit ihrer Theologie und Ethik vorgestellt. Ein zweites Kapitel, der Hauptteil des Buches, beschreibt die Aufnahme der neuen Lehren in der Gesellschaft, differenziert nach ihren Standen (Adel, Burger, Bauern), und die damit verbundenen Konflikte. Die dauerhafte politische Durchsetzung der Reformation wird in einem dritten Teil als Reaktion der Fursten auf die Reformation als gesellschaftliche Bewegung interpretiert.
