Hauptthema der 152 Briefe Bullingers von Juni bis September 1546 ist der Schmalkaldische Krieg (1546/1547), die Auseinandersetzung fast aller protestantischen Fursten und Freien Stadte Deutschlands mit dem katholischen Kaiser Karl V. Diese Quellen erlauben vollig neue Erkenntnisse zur Haltung der einzelnen eidgenossischen Orte: Auch wenn kein Ort offiziell in den Krieg zog, beteiligten sich aufseiten der deutschen Protestanten etwa 4000 Soldner aus den vier protestantischen Orten Basel, Bern, Schaffhausen und Zurich (darunter 150 Stadtzurcher), aus Appenzell, den Juragebieten und sogar aus Uri. Die Briefe liefern neue Informationen zu Augsburg, zu zahlreichen durch den Krieg motivierten Veroffentlichungen sowie zur Haltung der Kirchenvorsteher Heinrich Bullinger und Oswald Myconius gegenuber dem Krieg.
