For historians interested in the 16th century, the correspondence of the Zurich Antistes Heinrich Bullinger (1504-1575) provides one of the most significant sources in terms of politics, culture, church history, the history of ideas and biography. This volume publishes, summarizes and comments upon approximately 140 letters written from January to May 1546. They show how the Protestant Confederates perceived Luther’s death and the disturbing events in Germany as leading to the Smalcald War in the summer of 1546. The letters also illustrate Zurich’s influence on neighboring cantons and cities, not only in Switzerland. Of particular importance is the correspondence with Augsburg, Basel and Constance. Yet Bullinger’s influence can also be traced in the Aargau, Alsace, Friesland, Grisons and Cologne. The letters of Zurich students sent from Basel, Strasbourg and Marburg provide interesting information on the respective universities that had until now been partly unknown.
