Avant-propos: Le De natura corporis et animae de Guillaume de Saint-Thierry peut etre considere comme le livre meconnu d’un auteur lui-meme longtemps passe inapercu dans l’ombre imposante de son ami Bernard de Clairvaux. Aujourd’hui on rend justice a l’auteur, tandis que le livre retient l’attention des historiens de la pensee. Il etait donc souhaitable qu’on put y acceder, comme c’est le cas pour la plupart des ouvrages de Guillaume, dans une edition critique accompagnee d’une traduction. Dans notre introduction et nos notes, nous avons voulu avant tout apporter des eclaircissements sur le texte, ses sources, sa composition, sa transmission.Nous souhaitons que cette nouvelle edition fasse mieux connaitre une oeuvre bien representative de l’humanisme medieval puisqu’on y retrouve, assimilees mais non deformees, les richesses d’un heritage antique transmis tant par les Peres de l’Eglise que par la litterature medicale greco-arabe, et repris dans une construction neuve par un des esprits les plus originaux du XIIe siecle.
