Apres un groupe de dix livres qui ont traite des realites immuables de la science et de la foi, le livre XI des Etymologies ouvre veritablement un second ensemble de l’encyclopedie isidorienne, plus nettement consacre au monde de l’homme. Au seuil de cet ensemble, c’est l’homme lui-meme dont ce livre revendique l’etude. Corps humain, ages de la vie, mais aussi monstres et metamorphoses sont les themes de notices dont Isidore emprunte la substance aussi bien aux naturalistes et medecins anciens qu’aux philosophies paiennes et aux Peres de l’Eglise.
