Francois de Lorraine, Duke of Guise, was one of the major political figures in France from 1547 until his death in 1563. In his quest for divine salvation and social recognition he was the driving force in Henri II’s project for universal rule, a staunch defender of Catholics, and a supporter of the fragile reigns of both Francois II and Charles IX.
