The conference proceedings focus on the cultural transfers between France and Germany that are linked to the life and work of Adelbert von Chamisso. The contributions are dedicated to processes of knowledge circulation and proliferation as well as the changing roles that Chamisso took on within the framework of various cultural interaction dynamics. The focus is on his activities not only as a translator, letter writer and border crosser, but also as a pioneer of a European modernity who was soon praised as a poete gracieux in France and appropriated as a Volksdichter in Germany. In addition to studies on Chamisso’s literary texts and his correspondence, the conference volume also offers new source material (e.g. Helmina von Chezy’s necrology on Juliette Recamier).
