The story of Paradise – the creation of Adam and Eve, their life in the Garden, the transgression of the divine command, and the expulsion from Eden – is among the most popular narratives of the Old Testament. Time and again it has served as a point of departure for reflections on the nature of humanity and its relations to nature, to God, and to one another. This volume explores the narrative and its reception from the writings of the Church Fathers to contemporary philosophy, across Judaism and Christianity, and in art and literature. In these works, distinctive conceptions of species, gender, and transcendence are articulated and developed; yet, across periods, regions, and discourses, they display striking continuities that continue to shape our thinking today.
