English summary: Based on a precise analysis of the Elihu speeches, Tanja Pilger shows their redaction-critical composition and describes a theology according to the different topics mentioned by Elihu. The concept of the divine as a merciful redeemer and the understanding of suffering as education can be regarded as unique concepts in the Elihu speeches. These are combined with the appearance of a merciful angel mediating between suffering mankind and God intending humankind’s redemption. Furthermore, the Elihu speeches shed light on the idea of God’s justice and righteousness as well as on the concept of God as the creator and humankind as God’s creature. The Elihu speeches can be seen as the first theological debate and reflection on Job and his fate.
