Hippolytus’ work In Danielem, written around 204 AD and usually referred to as the Danielkommentar (Daniel Commentary) in German, is the oldest completely preserved continuous interpretation of an entire biblical book penned by a Christian. It is one of the oldest documents of its kind, and remains both much discussed in exegetical research and extensively used for the study and teaching of theology, as well as in ecclesiastical practice. Katharina Bracht examines In Danielem with a special focus on its communicative strategies in the communicative triangle formed by pretext, commentary and readership in order to gain an exemplary insight into the early days of the Christian Bible commentary and to illuminate the origins of the genre. The analysis and interpretation of this document by Hippolytus also contribute to clarifying its authorship and thus the so-called Hippolytus question. German text.
