Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, vor allem aber seit dem Koreakrieg (1950-1953), hat sich das Interesse fur Korea, oftmals als eine Kulturbrucke zwischen China und Japan bezeichnet, erheblich gesteigert. An vielen europaischen und nordamerikanischen Universitaten wird jetzt Koreanistik gepflegt, und auch das grosse Publikum beginnt stets mehr einzusehen, dass sich in der koreanischen Kultur trotz der vielen chinesischen Einflusse zahlreiche Eigentumlichkeiten erhalten haben. Ziel des Verfassers war, das typisch Koreanische besonders hervorzuheben; daher ist den alten einheimischen Religionen, dem Mythenbestand, dem Schamanismus und dem Volksglauben mehr Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet worden als dem Buddhismus oder dem Konfuzianismus. In die verschiedenen Abschnitte sind viele Ubersetzungen aus der koreanischen klassischen Literatur, aber auch von Uberlieferungen, Legenden und Marchen, eingeflochten.
