Licht – ruft es nicht in allen Kulturen ahnliche Konnotationen hervor? Es scheint so: In vielen Religionen steht Licht fur Wissen, Tugend, Wohlbefinden, Uberlegenheit, Freude, Ruhm und Schonheit. So auch im Buddhismus, der besonders das Licht der Weisheit und der Majestat des Buddha kennt. Was lasst sich noch vom Licht im Buddhismus sagen? Ohne weiter daruber nachzudenken, sprechen wir im Deutschen uber diese Religion als die des “Erleuchteten”. Aber in dem Sanskrit-Titel Buddha steckt gar nicht das Bild vom Licht. Er ist der “(zur Erkenntnis) Erwachte”. Und doch hat der Buddha in einigen Texten eine Beziehung zum Licht: manchmal sendet er beim Lacheln Strahlen aus. Weitere Erkenntnisse – erwartete wie unerwartete – zur Bedeutung der Metapher Licht im Mahayana-Buddhismus sind mit Hilfe eines umfangreichen Registers problemlos auffindbar.
