Using Paul’s letter to the Philippians as an example, this volume explores the complex philological and conceptual interaction between Paul and the intellectual and social traditions of the Hellenistic-Roman world. The essays reflect the wealth of these connections and deal, inter alia, with aspects pertaining to philosophy and ethics, social history and legal history, rhetoric and communication strategy.
English summary: The contributions in this volume mostly go back to a symposium held in Zurich in the fall of 2013. Using the example of Paul’s Epistle to the Philippians, they reflect on the interdependence of Paul’s thought and speech and the diverse intellectual traditions and social conventions that were part of his Hellenistic-Roman context. The individual essays reflect the broad diversity of such references and take aspects including philosophy and ethics, social and legal history as well as rhetorics and communication strategy into account.
