This volume is a multidisciplinary approach to Byzantine religious and social customs related to monastic entry and life. It aims to explain certain little understood aspects of the history of liturgical ritual and the history of social practices, such as the terminology used to describe the stages of monastic life, the origin of the small monastic habit, and the introduction of tonsure among the practices signifying entry to the monastery. The research is based on the distinction between two quite different monastic traditions, originating in Jerusalem and Constantinople, respectively. Their coexistence without conflict allows us to see the history of the practices studied as a “tale of two cities,” a term already used by R. Taft in a strictly liturgical context, but not yet applied to monastic life.
