English summary: After the rise of the Assyria as a major imperial power in the second half of the second millennium BCE, the god Assur was not only responsible for the good of the city that bore his name, but also for the entire country. For this reason, the Temple of Assur came to play a central role in the conception of the empire itself and as a place closely related to the legitimation of Assyria’s empire. At the same time, the temple was also the largest and most important shrine in the city of Assur with a lengthy architectural history on its own. The earliest reference to a shrine in this region occurred in the third millennium BCE and the last reference was made around 614 BCE at the time of the destruction of the city. The goal of this book is to present a complete analysis of the entire excavation of the temple, including new developments in the architectural excavation as well as a catalog of all finds from the Temple of Assur. On the basis of this information, this work offers new findings about the construction of the temple and the operation life of the shrine as well as a functional analysis of the temple compound and its inventory. This book concludes the series on monumental buildings from Assur, within the context of the Assur-Project, a collaborative effort of the Free University of Berlin, the German Oriental Society and the Near East Museum of Berlin. German description: Nach dem Aufstieg Assyriens zur Grossmacht in der 2. Halfte des 2. Jahrtausends v.Chr. wurde der Gott Assur nicht nur fur das Wohl der gleichnamigen Stadt verantwortlich, sondern auch fur das ganze Land. Damit einhergehend nahm der Assur-Tempel eine zentrale Rolle in der Konzeption des gesamten Reiches ein und wurde Assyriens Ort der Herrschaftslegitimation. Zugleich war er das grosste und wichtigste Heiligtum der Stadt Assur. Der Assur-Tempel zeichnet sich durch eine sehr lange Baugeschichte aus. Die fruhesten Hinweise auf ein Heiligtum in diesem Gebiet stammen aus dem 3. Jahrtausend v.Chr., sein Ende fand er erst im Jahr 614 v.Chr. bei der Zerstorung der Stadt. Der Band umfasst die erste vollstandige Auswertung der gesamten Grabungsdokumentation. Enthalten ist neben der Neubearbeitung des Architekturbefundes auch ein Katalog aller Funde aus dem Assur-Tempel. Auf dieser Grundlage bietet die Arbeit neue Erkenntnisse uber den Aufbau des Tempels und die Nutzungsdauer des Heiligtums sowie eine funktionale Analyse der Tempelraume und ihres Inventars. Dieser Band beschliesst die Reihe zu den monumentalen Gebauden aus Assur, die im Rahmen des Assur-Projekts der Freien Universitat Berlin, der Deutschen Orientgesellschaft und des Vorderasiatischen Museums Berlin bearbeitet wurden.
