Der Band behandelt ein Gebaude von zentraler Bedeutung fur den assyrischen Staat. Er enthalt sowohl eine umfassende Beschreibung der architektonischen und archaologischen Befunde des Alten Palastes von den altesten Schichten bis in die nachassyrische Zeit als auch eine ausfuhrliche Prasentation aller sich auf den Palast beziehenden schriftlichen Quellen. Fur die Darstellung der Architektur wurde die gesamte verfugbare Dokumentation mit einbezogen: so wurden erstmals die Planquadrate in die Plane eingetragen sowie 3000 Hohenmesspunkte, die eine detaillierte Vorstellung vom Niveau der Fussboden und Mauern der einzelnen Raume vermitteln. Ausserdem konnten alle Grabungsfotos verwendet werden. Fotoplane mit angegebenem Standpunkt und Richtung erleichtern das Verstandnis der fotogra?erten Strukturen. In einem Katalog sind die Eckdaten aller ca. 2000 Fundobjekte enthalten. Die Plane, Fotos und Objektdaten sind auch auf einer beigefugten CD gespeichert. Die inschriftliche Dokumentation vermittelt die Baugeschichte in grosser historischer Tiefe. Die Inschriften erwahnen zahlreiche namentlich bekannte Raume und Bauelemente und ermoglichen es, sowohl deren Funktion als auch deren Position im Palast wahrscheinlich zu machen.
