Das Lied will nicht als neutraler Tatsachenbericht über die Auseinandersetzung israelitischer Stämme mit Kanaan verstanden werden. Das Wissen um die Allmacht Gottes und seine Parteinahme für sein Volk prägen das Lied. Die Gerechtigkeitstaten Gottes gelten seinem Volk in Gegenwart und Zukunft. Insofern geht es in Jdc 5 nicht um das Verhältnis von Geschichte und Fiktion, sondern um das von Geschichte und Bekenntnis.
