E lecito per il fedele danzare? E il tema di una riflessione morale che, misurandosi pratiche sociali del ballo via via diverse, ha accompagnato la storia delle chiese cristiane dalle origini fino ai giorni nostri. A partire dalla teologia e dalla predicazione medievali, una tappa fondamentale di quella riflessione si sviluppa fra e nelle diverse confessioni e varieta nazionali del cristianesimo postriformato. Il confronto fra pubblici accusatori e avvocati difensori della danza e serrato: si combatte una battaglia di citazioni e argomentazioni che tendono a elidersi le une con le altre. A che cosa assomigliavano le danze di allora: a quella pia improvvisata da Davide davanti all’arca, oppure a quella seducente e sciagurata di Salome al banchetto di Erode ? Il conteso in cui si svolgevano queste dispute e quella stessa civilta del rinascimento in cui il ballo aveva raggiunto piena maturita estetica e le danze di societa erano diventate scuola quotidiana dove si apprendevano le buone maniere, i medici ne apprezzavano il valore come esercizio fisico, mentre viaggiatori incuriositi ne scoprivano la frequenza tra i selvaggi.
