Verso la fine del VI secolo a.C. la scultura greca produsse uno dei fenomeni destinati a lasciare una traccia duratura nella sua storia secolare: la statua/ex-voto dedicata agli atleti come premio per la vittoria nei giochi sacri, che eternava agli occhi dei contemporanei e dei posteri la gloria dell’impresa sportiva. Dai primi decenni del V secolo a.C. i santuari panellenici – e specialmente Olimpia e Delfi – si popolarono di immagini di atleti: un’umanita ideale effigiata nel bronzo e dislocata nell’area sacra, accanto ai templi, sanciva il prestigio delle piu celebri e potenti famiglie delle aristocrazie cittadine, orgogliose della propria arete e della larghezza di mezzi economici profusi. Nello spazio di tre secoli e mezzo alcuni dei piu grandi maestri della scultura greca, come Pitagora, Mirone, Policleto, Lisippo, lasciarono opere di straordinaria bellezza e suggestione formale, oggi irrimediabilmente perdute, fagocitate dalla fame di bronzo che alla fine del mondo antico investi i luoghi nei quali erano esposte. Echi, spesso pallidi tentativi di emulazione, ci restano nella cospicua produzione copistica di eta romana. Il volume, attraverso l’esame delle fonti scritte e figurate, pone in luce gli elementi salienti che condussero alla nascita della statua atletica e le linee del suo sviluppo, affrontando anche alcuni aspetti del fenomeno in epoca romana, attraverso elenchi aggiornati delle repliche dei tipi statuari.
