Au contraire des autres ouvrages scripturaires d’Haymon d’Auxerre, souvent recopies, son commentaire sur Ezechiel n’a connu qu’une diffusion restreinte. Il en subsiste un seul manuscrit, le Parisinus latinus 12302, qui se trouvait precedemment dans la bibliotheque de Saint-Germain-des-Pres, et qui a ete redecouvert seulement en 1912. Il a ete copie a Auxerre sous l’abbatiat de Heldric (989-1009), directement d’apres l’exemplaire de reference conserve dans l’abbaye de profession de l’auteur. La desaffection dont l’ouvrage fut l’objet tient peut-etre au fait qu’il est demeure inacheve. L’auteur n’est pas alle plus loin que le chapitre 39, laissant sans explication la description du temple ideal et de la Jerusalem eschatologique sur laquelle se termine le livre. Une explication possible serait qu’il s’agit de son dernier ouvrage, et que la charge abbatiale qu’il a assume dans ses dernieres annees, voire la mort, l’aurait empeche de le mener a son terme. Quoi qu’il en soit, le maitre auxerrois y apparait au sommet de son art, entretissant avec aisance exegese historique et allegorique dans ce style elegant et limpide qui le caracterise. Il meritait d’etre tire de l’oubli dans l’edition princeps qui en est proposee ici.
