Das vorliegende Buch setzt sich aus drei unterschiedlichen Teilen zusammen. Im ersten Kapitel werden zum ersten Mal die wichtigen Texte auf dem Naos mit den Dekanen publiziert, der sich als ein altagyptischer Vorlaufer der griechischen und lateinischen Dekantexte herausstellt. Das zweite Kapitel behandelt die diagonalen Sternuhren auf den Holzsargen des Mittleren Reiches. Gegenuber der bislang vertretenen Ansicht, dass aufgehende Dekansterne zur Stundenmessung gedient hatten, wird hier dafur argumentiert, dass es sich schon aus Grunden der Praktikabilitat heraus um untergehende Sterne handeln muss. Das letzte und langste Kapitel behandelt die ramessidischen Sternuhren, die nicht, wie man fruher dachte, ein vollig chaotisches System der Zeitmessung darstellen. Die Untersuchung zeigt, dass wir es mit einer technischen Fortentwicklung der Dekansternuhren zu tun haben, die in die Zeit des Senenmut, des Baumeisters und Gunstlings der Konigin Hatschepsut zuruckreicht. Wahrend die durch die Dekane gemessenen Stunden unverandert im Sommer und Winter knappe 40 Minuten lang sind, ermoglichen die ramessidischen Dekansternuhren eine die Jahreszeiten berucksichtigende Bestimmung der zwolf Nachtstunden. Verschiedene Indices und mehrere Sternkarten beschliessen das Buch.
