Le Dieu égyptien Shaï dans la religion et l’onomastique

Le terme Shai, ou “celui qui determine”, designe la notion egyptienne du Destin. Par rapport a l’homme, il implique les limitations de l’existence; pour le roi, c’est la manifestation salutaire de sa personnalite, tandis que Shai est integre dans la theologie comme la volonte creatrice des dieux. L’evolution de Shai vers un dieu primordial et universel peut etre suivie a travers les textes a partir du Nouvel Empire jusqu’a l’epoque copte. Plusieurs pendants feminins se sont associes comme paredres a cette entite masculine, dont la parente avec l’Agathodemon hellenistique a ete insuffisamment reconnue. Il y a non seulement des textes egyptiens, grecs et coptes qui nous renseignent sur Shai; l’onomastique egalement est une source d’information importante. Le classement des noms propres en transcription grecque vise en outre un but particulier, puisque la repartition geographique des variantes shai et shoi montre qu’il s’agit de vocalisations dialectales. L’isophone alo, ainsi etablie, a ete comparee avec les donnees des dialectes coptes. Cette methode permet de mieux delimiter les aires des differents parlers et de remonter jusqu’au 3e siecle av. n.e. dans l’histoire des dialectes egyptiens.
