English summary: This book presents the findings from new excavations in the Assyrian capital city of Assur, which has long held pride of place within the German archaeological legacy, that were undertaken in 1989-1990 and 2000-2001. On account of war and political conflict, the excavation project was interrupted twice and the current political situation has certainly not improved conditions for archaeological work to resume. For these reasons, the authors found it reasonable to present a partial publication about the current findings concerning the western residential quarter of the city, which are made available in this volume. These findings include detailed views related to the ruins of mostly private houses and their contents, especially ceramic vessels, terra-cotta figures, seals, and tools made from various materials from the period of time just before the decline of the Assyrian Empire at the end of the 7th century BCE. These excavations also discovered one of the most important finds of cuneiform texts from two table archives, of which the older of the two groups contains Egyptian materials and the later of the two groups belonged to a merchant named Duri-Assur. The Duri-Assur collection contains 75 letters and administrative documents with a veritable treasure trove of information concerning the organization of Assyrian business. The book also contains the findings from excavations containing findings from the Parthian period in the ruins of Assyrian houses. The description of these finds is enhanced by anthropological analysis of human remains from these excavations in Assur and other recently discovered graves. German description: Das Buch prasentiert Ergebnisse der neuen Ausgrabungen in der assyrischen Hauptstadt Assur, der traditionsreichen Forschungsstatte der deutschen Archaologie, die in den Jahren 1989-1990 und 2000-2001 durchgefuhrt wurden. Durch die Kriege im Irak uberschattet, musste das Grabungsprojekt zwei Mal unterbrochen werden und lasst sich wegen der heutigen politischen Situation leider nicht fortsetzen. Deshalb erschien es den Autoren sinnvoll, zumindest eine partielle Publikation des Fundmaterials vorzubereiten, das in diesem Band zunachst fur den grossten Grabungsabschnitt im westlichen Wohngebiet vorgelegt wird. Er bietet einen detaillierten Einblick in die Baureste mehrerer Privathauser und ihre Inventare – Keramikgefasse, Terrakottafigurinen, Siegel und Gerate aus verschiedenem Material – aus der Zeit kurz vor dem Niedergang des assyrischen Imperiums am Ende des 7. Jahrhunderts v.Chr. Zu den wichtigsten Funden gehoren Keilschrifttexte zweier Tontafelarchive, von denen das altere einer Gruppe von Agyptern, das jungere einem Kaufmann mit Namen Duri-Assur gehorte. Dieses letztere umfasste 75 Briefe und Verwaltungstexte mit vielen detaillierten Informationen zur Organisation des assyrischen Handels. Des Weiteren behandelt das Buch auch Bestattungen, die vorwiegend in der parthischen Zeit in die Ruinen assyrischer Hauser eingetieft worden sind. Ihre Beschreibung wird durch die anthropologische Auswertung menschlicher Skelettreste aus den hier und in anderen Grabungsabschnitten freigelegten Grabern erganzt.
