Angela Standhartinger interprets the Epistle to the Philippians as a prisoner’s correspondence with his favorite congregation. She integrates religious and socio-historical source material in a theological interpretation of the Greek text. The work contains an extended introduction and eighteen excursuses which provide information about significant topics such as the ancient city of Philippi, collected letters, humility, the Philippian hymn, mimesis, community structure and leadership of an early Pauline congregation and greetings from the house of Caesar.
Im Philipperbrief liegen drei Schreiben vor, die in Philippi Anfang des 2. Jh. als Abschiedswort des Martyrerapostels editiert wurden. Neuere Forschungen zu Philippi lokalisieren die Adressaten an den Randern der Colonia Philippi. Paulus schreibt als ein den ublichen Haftbedingungen unterliegender Gefangener an seine Lieblingsgemeinde, um sich fur ihre Unterstutzung zu bedanken und sie auf eine Weiterexistenz trotz seiner Hinrichtung vorzubereiten. Wie viele Gefangene deutet Paulus manche Botschaft lediglich an, um sie vor ungebetenen Mitlesenden und Gefangniswartern zu schutzen. Mit wichtigen Texten wie dem Philipperhymnus, einer weisheitlichen Idealbiographie und Reflexionen der Hoffnung auf eine postmortale Existenz dankt Paulus fur die Unterstutzung und versucht das Weiterleben der Gemeinde zu starken. In dieser Neubearbeitung des Handbuchs bietet Angela Standhartinger ein “Orientierungswerk”, das Lesenden Material zum eigenen Denken an die Hand gibt.
