English summary: In his commentary on John, Hartwig Thyen refrains from dealing extensively with the genesis of the Gospel and its presumed sources. He interprets the Fourth Gospel as a highly poetic literary text, and examines the textual interplay with its three synoptic precursors. Hartwig Thyen’s assumption is that the author of the Gospel was not only aware of these precursors himself; he also took it for granted that there was a readership which was familiar with the texts, and these readers were able to understand the textual interplay. For Thyen, the Gospel of John is a text for all Christians or for everyone who is able to read, and not a work which addresses a specifically Johannine community which is isolated from the rest of the early church.
