After its foundation by Alexander the Great, Alexandria quickly grew into a large city of a new type. People of very different origins created a new living space and new social structures. The oldest known burial ground in the city is the necropolis of Shatby, which was used in the particularly turbulent one hundred years after the city was founded. Excavations at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as the authors’ current post-excavations, show the evolution of Alexandrian burial forms and funerary architecture, which drew on a variety of sources of inspiration. In addition to detailed analyses of the old and new archaeological evidence, the volume offers insight into the social ties and conditions reflected in the tombs. The rapid growth of the city eventually led to the abandonment of the early necropolis. This process can also be traced in the archaeological record.

hellenistischen Gesellschaft Alexandrias versteht.“

Von: Katja Lembke
In: Göttinger Forum für Altertumswissenschaft 22 (2019) 1153-1160
