En publiant l’Enquete sur l’entendement humain en 1748, Hume donne une nouvelle forme, plus concise mais tout aussi precise, a l’examen critique de l’entendement, mene dix ans plus tot dans le Traite de la Nature Humaine. Il commence par exposer, a nouveaux frais, sa doctrine de la causalite, doctrine sceptique qui marque les limites de la connaissance humaine et qui montre que le raisonnement de causalite n’est rien qu’une croyance portee par une habitude mentale. Puis, de cette etude, il tire les principes d’une analyse critique, qui n’a rien perdu de sa puissance aujourd’hui et qu’il applique aux grandes questions metaphysiques et religieuses de l’epoque. Ce qui le conduit a definir une forme de scepticisme qu’il dit ” modere ” ou ” mitige “.
