No egyptologist tackling personal names especially from the Late Period can afford to ignore the ast Demotic evidence assembled here, all the less so because several names happen to be attested only in Demotic, but not in hierroglyphs.Many names are of non-Egyptian origin. By using the indices, specialists in the fields of Greek papyrology, Semitic, Iranic or Meroitic may easily know which foreign names are found in Demotic transmission. Last but not least: As the names frequently have a religious background, this work is also a rich source for the study of deities and cults of the Late Period. German description: Von den drei grossen altagyptischen Sprachepochen (Agyptisch im engeren Sinne, Demotisch und Koptisch) hat bisher nur die erste mit dem von 1935 bis 1952 erschienenen Namenbuch von H. Ranke eine lexikalische Erschliessung ihrer Personennamen erfahren. In einem langjahrigen Unternehmen wurden nun auch die Personennamen des gesamten zur Zeit zuganglichen demotischen Schrifttums gesammelt und hier vorgelegt. Die Quellen sind Papyri, Ostraka und andere Schriftdenkmaler der letzten sieben Jahrhunderte vor und die ersten vier nach Christus, als sich aus den Hieroglyphen die so genannte demotische Schrift entwickelte.Ein bemerkenswerter Einblick in die Rechts- und Wirtschaftsverhaltnisse ihrer Zeit wird uns durch diese Urkunden gewahrt. Die geschaftlichen und rechtlichen Beziehungen zwischen ihnen und damit ihr rechtes Verstandnis werden durch die Namen der beteiligten Personen gesichert und deutlich. So kommt den Personennamen besondere Bedeutung zu. Abgesehen davon sind sie wegen der vielfach religiosen Namensinhalte auch fur die Religionsgeschichte ihrer Zeit wichtig. Da aber andere demotisch zahlreich belegte Namen nur Wiedergaben griechischer Namen und umgekehrt viele griechisch uberlieferte Namen agyptisch sind, erweisen sich die Personennamen oft auch als wesentliche Zeugen der Beziehungen zwischen beiden Bevolkerungsteilen im damaligen Agypten.
