Der Tradition von Hans Lietzmann (dem Begrunder dieser Reihe) folgend diskutiert er die philologischen und religionsgeschichtlichen Probleme. Dabei interpretiert er den Brief aber betont als theologisches Dokument, das die besondere Stellung des Christentums in der nichtchristlichen Umwelt der Hafen- und Handelsstadt Korinth belegt und reflektiert.Die Auslegung bestatigt die Annahme, dass der Erste Korintherbrief ungeachtet seines erheblichen Umfangs ein literarisch einheitlicher Text ist. Darin diskutiert Paulus alle die Gemeinde betreffenden aktuellen Probleme eingehend, und er versucht soweit wie moglich deren Klarung auf brieflichem Wege zu erreichen. Es fallt auf, dass die Intensitat der theologischen Argumentation des Apostels oft uber den unmittelbar gegebenen Anlass hinausgeht, insbesondere bei der Frage nach dem Verstandnis der Auferstehung der Toten. Der Brief wird durchgehend von dem Bemuhen bestimmt, die Einheit der Kirche trotz aller Differenzen innerhalb der Gemeinde zu wahren.
