Vom Klassizismus bis zum Ausgang des 20. Jahrhunderts werden 21 reprasentative russische Dramen vorgestellt und von ausgewiesenen Kennern analysiert. War das Drama in Russland nach einer langen theaterlosen Zeit zunachst nur Nachahmung westlicher Muster, gewann es im Zeitalter der Romantik, bei Griboedov, Puskin und Gogol, seine Selbstandigkeit und nationale Eigentumlichkeit. Am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde es dann von Anton Eechov im Bruch mit der gesamten abendlandischen Tradition des aristotelischen Theaters auf einen absoluten Hohepunkt gefuhrt. Das dramatische Schaffen dieses Autors, das eine bis heute andauernde Prasenz auf den Buhnen der Welt besitzt, ist deshalb mit allen vier grossen Stucken (Die Mowe, Onkel Vanja, Die drei Schwestern, Der Kirschgarten) vertreten. Der Band wird vom Herausgeber durch eine umfangreiche Entwicklungsgeschichte des russischen Dramas eingeleitet.
