Deutsche evangelische Kirchen und Missionswerke und Vertreter der aus der Auslands- und Missionsarbeit hervorgegangenen evangelischen Kirchen im heutigen Namibia und Sudafrika haben einen unabhangigen Forschungsprozess in Auftrag gegeben, um die deutsche evangelische Auslandsarbeit im kolonialen sudlichen Afrika aufzuarbeiten und die eigene Rolle kritisch zu untersuchen. Ziel des Studienprozesses ist, fur die Folgen des Kolonialismus gemeinsam Verantwortung zu ubernehmen und die kolonialen politischen und kulturellen Kategorien zu uberwinden, die das Denken und Handeln teilweise noch bis heute pragen. Die Ergebnisse dieses Studienprozesses werden nun in dem von Julia Lessing und Hanns Besten herausgegebenen Sammelband vorgestellt. Die Beitrage beleuchten so unterschiedliche Aspekte wie die theologischen Hintergrunde des Kolonialismus, das Leben der deutschen Siedler im sudlichen Afrika im 19. und fruhen 20. Jahrhundert und den Volkermord an den Herero und Nama. Dabei stellen sie die Frage, wie die Kirchen und Missionswerke zur Konstitution des kolonialen Systems der Rassentrennung beigetragen haben.
