In this study, Katharina Meinecke addresses the different types of sarcophagus burials in the Roman Empire. She focuses exclusively on those sarcophagi which had been preserved at their original location or for which the circumstances of their discovery have been sufficiently documented in order to understand their function within the grave as well as to place them within their respective context. The area of research is the city of Rome, which as the capital and center of the Roman Empire is particularly suitable due to its function as a role model, which manifested itself not only outside Rome, but even outside Italy. The time frame of the study ranges from the 5th century BC to the 3rd century AD with a main emphasis on sarcophagus burials during the 2nd and 3rd century AD, which was the key period for production of Roman sarcophagi decorated with reliefs.
