The formation of names in ancient Greek is not a closed subject. Eighty years after the publication of Pierre Chantraine’s fundamental work, The Formation of Names in Ancient Greek, the Rouen International Symposium presented some of the progress made in the study of the suffixes used to form nouns, adjectives, and adverbs in ancient Greek, and to observe them from the period of the Greek Mycenaean to the koine. The contributions gathered in this volume deal with several important suffixes and are preceded by general reflections on accentuation and on the functioning of the derivation.

French description: Quatre-vingts ans apres la parution de l’ouvrage toujours fondamental de Pierre Chantraine intitule La Formation des noms en grec ancien (1933), le colloque international de Rouen (17-18 octobre 2013) s’est donne pour objectif de presenter quelques-uns des progres effectues dans l’etude des suffixes qui servent a former les substantifs, les adjectifs et les adverbes en grec ancien, et d’observer ceux-ci sur la longue periode qui va du grec mycenien jusqu’a la koine. Les contributions reunies dans ce volume traitent de plusieurs series suffixales importantes et sont precedees par des reflexions generales sur l’accentuation et sur le fonctionnement de la derivation. L’etymologie n’est pas negligee puisqu’elle permet d’inserer des termes synchroniquement obscurs dans des series derivationnelles connues. La formation des noms en grec ancien n’est donc pas un sujet clos. Il importait de montrer que des progres se font chaque jour et qu’il y a bien de nouveaux acquis.
