Gottreich Ehrenhold Hartog (1738-1816) war in der Zeit des Ubergangs vom Pietismus zur Erweckungsbewegung Pfarrer im westfalischen Herford (1769-1814). Bei ihm verbanden sich lutherisch gepragte Lehre, pietistische Frommigkeit und ein ausgepragter Sinn fur die praktische Lebensbewaltigung in der Orientierung am biblischen Wort. So stellt sein hochgebildeter Freund, Pastor Karl Weihe, ihn als engagierten Seelsorger sowie erfolgreichen Prediger dar und schildert den Lebensstil eines Stadtpfarrers um 1800, der ‘wohl oft als Pietist bezeichnet worden’ ist. Aus diesem Grund stellt Weihe seiner ‘Lebensbeschreibung und Charakterschilderung’ Hartogs sieben Kapitel ‘uber Pietismus’ voran.Diese Ausgabe bietet einen ausgezeichneten kommentierten Text zu einem spannenden Abschnitt westfalischer Kirchengeschichte aus der Erweckungszeit.
