Gottfried Arnold (1666-1714) ist vor allem durch seine ‘Unparteiische Kirchen- und Ketzerhistorie’ (1699/1700) bekannt geworden, die in der neuzeitlichen Geschichts- und Kirchengeschichtsschreibung eine wichtige Etappe markiert. Bereits die Vorlesung bei Antritt seiner Giessener Geschichtsprofessur (1697) und bisher unbekannte Disputationsthesen (1697) lassen programmatische Weichenstellungen erkennen. Die Texte werden im lateinischen Wortlaut ediert und kommentiert und erstmals ins Deutsche ubertragen. Erganzt werden sie durch weitere Dokumente zu seiner Giessener Zeit. Arnolds “Gedoppelter Lebenslauf”, dessen erster Teil von ihm selbst entworfen, dann nach seinem Tod von Freunden fortgeschrieben wurde, ist ein aufschlussreicher Text fur die pietistische Biographik und Autobiographik.
