Barbara Aland entfaltet ein Verstandnis der Gnosis, das sie nicht von deren angeblich vorchristlichen Ursprungen und nicht vom Neuen Testament aus entwickelt, sondern von den reichhaltigen, verschiedenartigen und sich erganzenden Quellentexten zur Gnosis selbst her: den polemischen Schriften der Gnosisgegner und den gnostischen Originaltexten. Es stellt sich heraus, dass beiden Quellengattungen die gleiche gnostisch-theologische Kernaussage zugrunde liegt, die – hier – protreptisch und apologetisch und – dort – polemisch verzerrend dargeboten wird. Aufgrund dessen kann die Gnosis als der Versuch von fruhen Christen verstanden werden, den zentralen Gehalt ihres christlichen Glaubens in der ihrer Zeit und Umwelt gemassen mythisch-bildhaften oder philosophischen Ausdrucksweise verstandlich zu machen. Insbesondere die Texte der Kirchenvater erweisen dabei, diskursanalytisch betrachtet, ihre ausgezeichnete hermeneutische Qualitat.
