Dialogus noviciorum: Novizengesprache

Within the extensive oeuvre of Thomas von Kempen (1379/80-1471), the Dialogus noviciorum is one of three historiographical works in a broader sense. But while his vita of St. Lidewigis/Lidwina of Schiedam and the chronicle of his monastery Agnetenberg near Zwolle each represent a firmly defined type of genre, the biographies from the founding phase of the devotio moderna, intended for the instruction of novices and inserted into a dialogical framework, are loosely related in form to the various traditions of early Christian patristic literature and medieval monastic narratives and religious histories. Thus, the Dialogus is not only important as a historical source, but also interesting as a living testimony to the monastic culture of conversation and memory. Since this delightful work was previously available only within an edition of Thomas’ Opera omnia, which dates from the first decades of the last century, a new edition, made more accessible by more reliable and transparent text, factual explanations, and the addition of a translation, seemed overdue. On the threshold of his commemorative year 2021, Thomas von Kempen can thus be remembered as a rather old-fashioned admonisher to turn away from the world and to retreat into the monastery.
Im umfangreichen OEuvre des Thomas von Kempen (1379/801471) ist der ‘Dialogus noviciorum’ eines von drei im weiteren Sinne historiographischen Werken. Wahrend jedoch die Vita der hl. Lidewigis/Lidwina von Schiedam und die Chronik seines Klosters Agnetenberg bei Zwolle jeweils einen festumrissenen Gattungstyp reprasentieren, stehen die zur Novizenunterweisung bestimmten und in einen dialogischen Rahmen eingefugten Biographien aus der Grunderphase der Devotio moderna in lockerer formaler Beziehung zu den verschiedenen Traditionen der fruhchristlichen Altvaterliteratur und der mittelalterlichen Klostererzahlungen und Ordensgeschichten. Damit ist der ‘Dialogus’ nicht nur als historische Quelle wichtig, sondern auch als lebendiges Zeugnis klosterlicher Gesprachs- und Erinnerungskultur interessant. Da dieses reizvolle Werk bislang nur innerhalb einer Ausgabe der ‘Opera omnia’ des Thomas verfugbar war, die aus den ersten Jahrzehnten des vorigen Jahrhunderts stammt, erschien eine durch zuverlassigere und transparentere Textgestaltung, Sacherlauterungen und die Zugabe einer Ubersetzung leichter zugangliche Neuedition uberfallig. An der Schwelle seines Gedenkjahres 2021 soll Thomas von Kempen, der weltberuhmte und vielgenannte Autor der ‘Nachfolge Christi’, in Erinnerung gebracht werden als ein durchaus unzeitgemaaer Mahner zur Abkehr von der Welt und zum Ruckzug ins Kloster.
