Hardly any other concept has been assessed so differently in recent years than that of freedom. The dispute over freedom of will is not only virulent in the historical recourse to the epoch of the Reformation, but also dominates the discussions about the modern and postmodern understanding of freedom. As the guiding idea of the modern age, the concept of freedom is popular in scientific discourses and is claimed in terms of each individual’s own way of life, but it remains ambiguous, if not contradictory. The theological contributions presented here seek answers between biblical reassurance, historical inquiry and systematic clarification. The unresolved controversy over freedom of will between Erasmus of Rotterdam and Martin Luther still appears in the theological discourse. Ecumenical research seeks to explore ways of understanding.
