Che ruolo gioca la religione in Medio Oriente? Quanta importanza rivestono le divisioni confessionali nei conflitti mediorientali? Una parte della storiografia, amplificata nelle sue posizioni da una campagna mediatica divenuta sempre piu pervasiva dopo l’11 settembre, ritiene che il Medio Oriente sia una regione pre-moderna nella quale la religione costituisce il principale elemento identitario e che l’islam sia la chiave per comprendere le cause di conflitti ritenuti non a caso “atavici”. Il presente volume affronta questi temi e ambisce a dimostrare come il Medio Oriente sia una terra decisamente piu laica di quanto non si creda. I tre casi di studio di cui il testo si occupa – il conflitto israelo-palestinese, ormai piu che centenario; gli scontri in Libano da meta Ottocento a fine Novecento; la rivalita tra Iran e Arabia Saudita, con le sue ricadute nelle guerre civili di Yemen e Siria – mettono in luce come la causa alla base di tali conflitti non sia affatto la religione. Le divisioni confessionali, pur presenti, sono solo una delle fratture esistenti e mai la piu rilevante. La religione e lo strumento privilegiato attraverso cui attori locali, regionali e internazionali agiscono, utilizzando identita confessionali che vengono incentivate, quando non create appositamente, per ragioni che sono essenzialmente politiche, economiche, sociali.
