English summary: The religious chivalric orders originated in the 12th and 13th centuries within the context of the Crusades in the Holy Land, on the Iberian Peninsula, and in the Baltic States. As a new form of religious orders, they united the older monastic ideals with the struggle against the enemies of Christendom. They received a great deal of support and were soon present throughout Latin Europe. While the Order of the Temple was dissolved at the beginning of the 14th century, and the Iberian chivalric orders came under the influence of their rulers effectively secularized, The Knights of St. John, the Order of Malta, and the Teutonic Knights in particular continue to exist today in changed form. This volume offers a comparative overview of developments from the 12th century to the present. German description: Die geistlichen Ritterorden entstanden im 12. und 13. Jahrhundert im Kontext der Kreuzzuge im Heiligen Land, auf der Iberischen Halbinsel und im Baltikum. Als neue Form geistlicher Orden vereinten sie die alteren monastischen Ideale mit dem Kampf gegen die Feinde der Christenheit. So erfuhren sie vielfache Unterstutzung und waren bald im gesamten lateinischen Europa prasent. Wahrend der Templerorden am Anfang des 14. Jahrhunderts aufgelost wurde und die iberischen Ritterorden faktisch sakularisiert unter den Einfluss der Herrscher gelangten, bestehen insbesondere die Johanniter/Malteser und der Deutsche Orden bis heute in gewandelter Form fort. Der Band bietet einen vergleichenden Uberblick uber die Entwicklungen vom 12. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart.
