Werner Diems Studie untersucht die semantische und phraseologische Differenzierung von arab. sabab “Strick” anhand von Texten in gereimter Kunstprosa des 10. bis 15. Jahrhunderts n.Chr. Dabei werden sowohl die arabische Lexik und Phraseologie als auch die Geschichte der arabischen Kunstprosa mit ihren intertextuellen Bezugen dargestellt. Die sekundare semantische Ausdifferenzierung von sabab beruht auf dem Umstand, dass sabab einen Strick nicht nur in seiner Materialitat, sondern insbesondere in seiner Funktion als Verbindung zwischen zwei Entitaten bezeichnet. Die daraus entstandenen semantischen Teilgebiete von sabab werden nach einer Einleitung in zwolf Kapiteln mit insgesamt 514 Belegen in Transkription und Ubersetzung prasentiert. Den Kernbereich des zugrunde gelegten Korpus bilden die Texte der massgeblichen Stilisten des 13. bis 15. Jahrhunderts. Diese sind in Agypten und Syrien al-Qadi al-Fadil (st. 596/1200), Diya’ ad-Din Ibn al-Atir (st. 637/1239), Mahmud al-Halabi (st. 725/1325), sihab ad-Din Ibn Fadl Allah al-‘Umari (st. 749/1349), Salah ad-Din as-Safadi (st. 764/1363), Ibn Nubatah (st. 768/1366) und Ibn Higgah (st. 837/1434) und im westlichen Bereich Ibn al-Hatib (st. 776/1374). Aus der Zeit davor sind vor allem die Texte Abu Ishaq as-Sabi’s (st. 384/994) und as-Sahib Ibn ‘Abbads (st. 385/995) berucksichtigt. Insgesamt sind 46 Stilisten vertreten.
