Das Buch bietet einen kurzgefassten Uberblick uber die wichtigsten lautlichen und morphologischen Phanomene in der deutschen Sprachgeschichte, zum Beispiel Zweite Lautverschiebung, Umlaut, Nebensilbenabschwachung, Auslautverhartung, Diphthongierung, Monophthongierung, Ablautreihen, starke und schwache Substantive und Adjektive. Neu ist dabei, nach einem einfuhrenden Kapitel “Was ist Deutsch?”, eine Aufteilung in Lautwandel und Formenwandel, erst danach werden die Phanomene chronologisch nach Alt-, Mittel- und Fruhneuhochdeutsch dargestellt, oft mit Ruckgriff auf die indoeuropaischen Verhaltnisse. Ebenfalls neu ist, dass sowohl dem Laut- als auch dem Formenteil ein eigenes Kapitel vorangestellt ist, in dem die jeweiligen Grundlagen gelegt werden, so dass mit diesem Wissen prinzipiell auch Sprachwandelphanomene in anderen Sprachen beschrieben werden konnen. Das Buch kann als Grundlage fur Lehrveranstaltungen dienen, eignet sich aber auch fur das Selbststudium.
