Referenz ist ein Begriff, der in der Semantik und der Pragmatik unentbehrlich ist. Als Sprecher beziehen wir uns mit Ausdrucken auf ‘Gegenstande’ (im allgemeinsten Sinne) – dies wird Sprecher-Referenz genannt. Und es gibt Ausdrucke, die dafur gemacht scheinen, dass wir als Sprecher uns mit ihnen auf Gegenstande beziehen konnen. Solche referenziellen Ausdrucke bezeichnen Gegenstande – dies wird semantische Referenz genannt. Sprecher-Referenz ist eine Handlung, semantische Referenz eine Relation. Die Natur und das Verhaltnis dieser beiden Formen von Referenz stehen im Zentrum dieser Einfuhrung, die die vielfaltigen Fragestellungen, die das Phanomen der Referenz aufwirft, vorstellt. Es wird in unterschiedliche Analysevorschlage und Theorieansatzen eingefuhrt, es werden zentrale Gegenstandsbereiche von referenziellen Ausdrucken (Definita, Demonstrativa, Eigennamen, Indefinita, Pronomen) eingehend empirisch behandelt und damit die verschiedenen Facetten der semantischen Referenz beleuchtet.
