Octavie est une oeuvre d’exception: c’est le seul exemple integralement conserve d’un genre exclusivement romain, la tragedie “pretexte” dont le sujet est emprunte a l’histoire nationale et non a la legende. Meme si les manuscrits qui nous transmettent la piece l’attribuent au philosophe Seneque, l’identite de son auteur nous est inconnue: il s’agirait d’un contemporain de Neron, proche de la cour imperiale. En meme temps qu’une oeuvre litteraire forte, une tragedie destinee a la recitation publique et a la lecture, l’Octavie est un exceptionnel document historique sur la periode neronienne: ce drame nous donne a lire une remarquable analyse de la tyrannie.
